Hello all......
I, being one is in reasonably fascinated and enthralled with space age irises,
want to mention an (IMHO) interesting facet of the late Monty Byers. My mom
had told me that Monty used to write some lengthy descriptions for his irises
for his Moonshine Gardens Catalog. She did not have any of these goodies
saved. I happen to be one who pores over these catalogs reading every
description so I was disappointed to not be able to see some examples...
In the August Wisconsin Iris Society newsletter, our editor reprinted what
Monty had to say about CONJURATION ('98 Dykes Medal Winner) in his 1990
catalog....
"Snow white whipped meringue standards, faintly edged soft suffused blue-
violet; snow white falls with stained borders of deep, bright amethyst violet;
white beards brushed tangerine and fuzzy white horns. This mesmerizer is
headed straight for the stars! Last year-- 1) at the Memphis Convention it
received just 11 votes less than PEACH BISQUE, winner of the Cook Cup; 2) at
the Colorado High Altitude Test Gardens it came in third; 3) at Oklahoma it
was given Dyer's 9-1-1 "Heart Stopper" Award (most significant hybridizing
achievement) Quoting Perry--" a tall,
commanding amoena in the tradition of it's parent ALPINE CASTLE, but with
drastically improved form, and horns. Thin stately stalks that I feel will
consistently be perfect for the shows and will hold up the average size
flowers with no problem in light wind and rain. Exceptionally vigorous and
floriferous, makes a smashing clump. A great breakthrough!" I think he
covered it!--Thanks Perry! Everyone seems to love this smaller flowered space
ager, and so far it's giving grand performances wherever it goes! Very
fertile both ways. Quadruple top sockets here and one year, on one stalk, all
four of these terminal flowers set pods- quite a sight! Can't wait to use it
and some of its seedlings with PLANNED TREASURE and Paul Black's fantastic new
SIGHS AND WHISPERS."
Wow, what an entry! I just thought it was interesting. That catalog must
have grown very fat with entries like that! That Monty, wish he were still
around!
Get busy Mike, Walter, and Rick writing up descriptions!! HA HA!
