Rosalie and Neil -- This is a very interesting subject. I'm sure you have
heard the legend that Albicans was spread into Europe by Turkish soldiers
who carried rhizomes with them to plant on the graves of their comrades. I
was reminded of that story some 25 years ago when, on a tour of the southern
flank of NATO, we were heading up the Ceyhan valley east of Adana, in
southern Turkey. It was April. We flashed past a graveyard, and saw iris
blooming profusely atop each mound!
Archaeology is often a great confirmer of oral tradition, such as the claim
of the Mongols, as long ago as the time of Genghis Khan, that the ancestors
of some of them were red-haired, blue-eyed people. Only within about the
last quarter century, have the graves and their frozen and mummified
occupants turned up to lend credence (at least by modern Westerners) to
these "myths". -- Griff
