Linda, my mind was only working at half speed. Sorry! I was thinking of
this years activities.

We once moved irises, as it snowed, during a very cold March. We took them
in clumps with the soil attached. We lined them up in the back of a pickup.
It took three trips. That was the spring of 1986, the year I made my first
crosses. Most survived.

I will make a conscious effort to cull out the weak ones here on my hill. I
will plant in different areas if I have the stock, just in case they don't
like the micro climate. And I will give them extra lime if it appears that is
what they need.

Among seedlings, it's been my policy to choose the strongest. I've been
challenged on this by people that say I shouldn't automatically eliminate weak
and/or slow growers. I've had seedlings rebloom that aren't fast increasers, and
I've had good growers that don't rebloom.

Now that I have more space I may give a small bed over the the pretty but
slow growers.

Betty W. in South-central KY Zone 6 . . . sorry, guess my mind wandered
there.
