Liinda Mann asks:
"Wouldn't I need a luminata to get rid of the sap pigments in the pink
spot around the beard?"
Neil responds:
That's what the I-sub-s as expressed in Prince George or Last Laugh does,
provided the effect as expressed in them is inherited intact.
Luminata genetics are part of the plicata allelic series. You are likely not
to get the pattern of haft and claw free of anthocyanins without a lot of
luck, compost making and a series of backcrosses, inbreeding and so on. The
luminata pattern is a segregate from or variant of the plicata locus--the
section of one of the iris chromosomes that brings about plicata type patterns
instead of selfs. You would have to ask Keith Keppel what it takes to get the
luminata expressed, but luminatas were very rare in early plicata breeding.
That suggests it takes a very narrow range of genetic possibilities for one to
appear. A luminata pattern would not give you the spot you have in your
fantasy picture, although what you would get might be very attractive.
Do yourself a favor and stay with the genetic dominants in the Last Laugh,
etc. possibilities. They will give you more and better results, I believe.
Your dream iris is going to take some combining a lot of different genetic
elements. Keep it simple as possible if you want to live to see the end
result.
