The HP 3970 is a nice scanner for about $100. It has a slot in the lid to hold slides for scanning. Goes up to 2400 X 2400 DPI. The scanning speed on most every scanner will likely be a function of the scanning resolution. Has a nice software package with it.
If you have a lot of slides to scan you would want to look into something that has an automated feed. Nikon makes one I think, or some big name like that.

Friends -- I'm about to replace my scanner, and would appreciate your
advice. I work primarily from slides, so the scanner must scan slides.
So, if some of you are scanning slides and have a scanner that you like,
please tell me. (Also let me know of any to avoid.)Besides good quality, I am
looking for speed. The one I now have is excruciatingly slow.
These days, of course, new slides can be put on a disk at the time of
developing, but I have many older ones that need to be copied post facto, and
the scanner is the cheapest and most convenient way to do it.
Thanks. -- Griff
