While many of you are coping with excess precipitation, those of us in the
southwest are experiencing exceptionally dry, cold weather.
Yesterday's low was 10 degrees F. -- low enough to freeze insulated pipes
inside the well house. Last night, it only dropped to 17 degrees so at least we
have water. As noon approaches today, the weather report is 41 degrees F.,
with 6% relative humidity. That makes the dew point -24. If numbers alone
don't tell the story, just think of the air as takes-your-breath-away dry.
Of course, raising the temperature to a comfortable level inside the house
means that the RH drops even further. By running two humidifiers 24/7, I've
managed to establish a small area where the RH is 24%. Not exactly comfortable,
but a lot better than 6! Ironic, though, to hear advice on the weather
channel about how to keep indoor RH safely below 50% in the winter.
Not that I'd trade this for icy roads and slogging through snow on foot....
