Re: OT: Weather Report from the Southwest

I live near Belen (north of, and I suspect higher than Sharon by quite a
bit), and was away for a long weekend. Luckily I turned off the power to
the well, and drained all the pipes before we left, because it dropped to
6F. That was a lesson learned the hard way a few years ago when the power
went out while we were away during another cold snap. Came home to a 15
ft. gusher at the well, and all the pipes broken (inside and out). Last
night was only down to 27F, so things are back to not so cold. My only
obvious damage, except maybe some plants that show the damage slowly, was a
ten gallon aquarium that's been sitting on the front steps for about three
years. It was full of water and the water froze solid to the bottom.
Broke the bottom out of it. Luckily the only critters in it were a few
wild bugs and some little snails. I had some tree cuttings and Louisianas
sitting in it, and they looked a bit funny when I pulled them out with a 7
gallon (or so - it melted a bit) block of ice and mud on the bottom
(complete with petrified snails). Stood up real nice, even with the wind.
They're in a bucket now. The snails are fine.

Even with that cold, the potted plants (one and five gallon) I watered on
Christmas afternoon were totally dried out this morning when we got home.

As for the Iris, I don't expect any damage, might even be good for some of
them to get good and cold?
