The American Peony Society has been dominated by one individual until her recent death and still is in a state of lethargy due to the continued controll of an oligargarchy of old timers that have not moved into the present let alone the future. A lesson for any plant society that concentrates authority among a small number of people.

Well, I hope it isn't true since Peony hybridizers are not exactly thick on
the ground, and I am glad C.S. Harrison isn't here to hear that rumor. Peonies
were his first floral love and, as a founding Director of the American Peony
Society, he was so very proud of the work they did at Cornell in the first
decade of the century toward straightening out the nomenclature of the genus. His
Peony Manual was the first American book on the Peony.
