Re: AIS: REF: AIS as International Registration Authority

We are part of a volunteer society. I never believe that anything should be mandatory. I also beleve it is never too late. The problem that has been presented in the past is that the registrar is so beleagered with the great numbers of registrations each year, that having to deal with, store, etc. images is the straw that would break the camels back. My solution, that I am presently promoting, is that each section or specialized group would assign a person who would store this extra information, images as well as additional data, and would maintain an archive for the registrar for just that group. Not only does this lighten the load for the registrar, it also means when a section or group prepares an illustrated checklist for their special group, they would have pictures and information from a primary source. There is a lot of stuff that never makes it into the official registry. At present when a section produces a checklist like the Median Checklist I worked on recently, they only
parrot back what the AIS registry has. If my scheme were enacted. They might have had not only the official info, but pictures, data like branching, bud count, purple base foliage, rebloom, etc. etc. It is not unreasonable to think that images might be added from sources later other than the hybridizer and that information could be continued to be collected by many members. If people think this is a good idea I would like to hear from them. They might even volunteer to be an archivist for a particular group. I already have 4 archivists lined up for the four classes of median Iris. We hope that hybridizers will begin to use this as a an adjunct to providing information at the time of registration. The Median's archivists will be able to share photos and info with the medianite editor so it is possible that new introductions that have provided picture may get illustrated in articles in the newsletter.

I think collection of iris images at the time of registration would be
highly desireable. I think it would help the registrar, as well as be a
nice resource for irisarians at large. One difficulty is that a really good
photo might not be available when one desired to register the iris. I found
that to be the case with several of mine. This was particularly true until
I retired 2 years ago, since available light wasn't good in the early
morning and late evening, when I was at home. So, perhaps such a system
could welcome submission of an image, without requiring it? -- Griff

Or how could we work out a system for collecting images of Irises at the
time of registration. I have presented a proposal in the new Medianite.
What does everyone think?
