Chuck, Neil, Dave and anyone else interested,
Here's another piece of information that might help
somewhat in piecing together the puzzle.

I have at least a dozen diploid seedlings from
'Kupari' white Iris pallida (which is said to be a
glaciata) crossed with Iris variegata (Beardsley
clone). The majority, I would call bitones, with
various blends of anthocyanin/purple and
carotenoid/yellow pigments. Several, however, have
been plicata with purple stitching on a
white-to-yellow ground. These hybrids haven't been the
most cooperative breeders (about eight seeds total
from the maiden bloom) but hopefully I'll be able to
get some F2 to shed more light on what's going on.
