Chuck, a few seedlings from
INTO THE NIGHT X WILD CARD (broken color plicata)
and
ART DECO (plicata) X UNDERSTUDY (?)
should bloom this spring. Unfortunately, few seeds and low germination
rate plus delayed germination from these crosses means these seedlings
will have the same problem as yours - low numbers. A few seedlings from
these still germinating.
Plus these crosses involve cultivars that may be too wierd to give
helpful information. WILD CARD is mostly broken color, but sometimes the
falls are ordinary plicata. The fact that it is both plicata <and>
broken color is interesting. ?.
UNDERSTUDY is heavily streaked and washed purple blue violet with
lighter veins and a darker, more solid rim on the falls. Tompkins, so
pedigree may not mean much, but says it's from dark plicata ancestry.
WILD CARD (D. Meek, R. 1983). Sdlg. B337-1-7. TB, 35" (89 cm), M-L.
"Heavily ruffled white ground plicata with variable markings in shades
of lavender to deep purple (no two blooms the same), brown hafts; white
beard tipped yellow. Rain Cloud X Rancho Rose. D & J Gardens 1983."
RAIN CLOUD (D. Meek, R. 1977). Sdlg. B19-1-3. TB, 36" (91 cm), M-L. "S.
solid deep blue-violet; F. white ground, heavily marked and dotted
blue-violet, lightly ruffled; blue-tipped beard, yellow in throat.
99-7-9: (Circle D x Stepping Out) X 88-2-9: (High Life x (Gay Tracery x
Milestone)). D & J Gardens 1978."
RANCHO ROSE (J. Gibson, R. 1974). Sdlg. 41-1A. TB, 38" (97 cm), M. "S.
magenta rose, serrated; F. daphne red markings on salmon rose ground;
white beard, nasturtium red tip. 6-9E X Osage Buff. Gibson 1975."
<I can't do all the crosses I would like and sometimes my cross to bloom
is so low I can't be sure how to interprete low count. I would put out
a general request to everyone to keep track of and count seedlings
from plicata crosses especiall any the are from or produce luminata,
glaciata, broken colour and zonal. Chuck Chapman a lot of ideas but
not enough data>
