I don't think all zonals are plicatas. Some zonals are plicatas, but not  
all. Some zonals from Schreiner's and Ghio show no plicata in their  background. 
There seems to be a real tendency to attribute all anthocyanine  patterns to 
plicata alleles. This is not justified by evidence. I would also  disagree with 
the contention that broken color has any necessary relationship to  the 
plicata series.
