If I understand what a zonal is (and I'm not sure I do yet).  It seems to
me that some lean toward the standard for luminatas, and others toward
plicatas.  Some have no striping or for that matter no anthocyanin
patterning at all around the beard area.  Others are strongly patterned
with lines around the beard.  I haven't gone back through many photos, but
it looks like the ones with patterning around the beard often have
anthocyanin in the beard too, while those without do not.  Seems to me this
might go back to the allele issue of respective doses of plicata, luminata,
glaciata, etc.
