My limited experience here in central NM is that they will transplant fine
at any season, but they are best in the fall when they are getting ready to
grow again after a summer dormancy. If the clump is moved dirt, roots, and
all, with no division, there is little set back at any season, but if
divided, they seem to re-establish the fastest and grow the best if moved
in September and into November. They seem to go into major shock if
transplanted in the summer when it is hot, and they usually don't reappear
at all until long about May or June the next year, when a little green
shoot appears (looking a bit like a seedling).
