Re: HYB: early seed germination

Every time I post something about my germination experiments, I forget
to say why I'm doing all this stuff. Got another note offlist about it
soo....

The reason I started messing around with stratifying seeds in the fridge
rather than the 'natural' way with outdoor planting is to get <early
germination>.

By <early>, I mean fall germination for those seeds that <don't> take
two years to germinate, and spring germination for those that <do> take
two years. For those of you who are satisfied with the time it takes for
your seeds to germinate and bloom <there is no reason to go to all this
trouble>.

!!

Main result this year - without the toilet tank soak (or other type of
pre-soak before stratification in the fridge) germination was less than
last year.

However, the crosses were different, and more germination may show up
after a second chilling. Hope to get additional germination in early
March.

Low germination rate in this first batch of seedlings is fine with me.
I'm still trying to learn what kinds of crosses with give me the <plant>
characteristics I want, and 50 seedlings from 14 different crosses is
<plenty> to take care of indoors over the winter.
