I guess it depends on whether you grow iris for increase or for beauty.  
Schreiner's have a display garden that is full of other things.  Some iris gardens 
don't seem to get weeded like they could and still manage to increase.  If 
the competition is flowers instead of weeds it seems better to me.  Last year I 
grew:  Glads, dahlia's, Oriental Lillies, Crocosmia, Daylillies, Cuphea, Hardy 
Fuschia's, Delphinium, Penstemon, Sunfast Coleus,  Belladonna, 
Chrysanthemum's and Dianthus and some other plants that are currently slipping my mind in my 
main flower bed.
