Robin, I was surprised when you got first generation rebloom, also! But
great to know. I bought RIO in 2002 with hopes of using it in rebloom crosses,
based on it's CA rebloom. Sad to say, I still have not seen a bloom stalk on
it. However, it is still alive and has three or four rhizomes. Maybe this
year? If it is fertile I will definitely use it. Still! (Have Braggadocio
too but have never seen bloom.)
Since it is not hardy in my area, people may wonder why I would use it.
There is always the chance that I will get something stronger when I cross with
irises that are stronger in my area. I've made crosses (of this nature)
where I lost every seedling, but that is rare.
I give 1816 as an example. Tara's Choice X Ritual/Regimen. To be honest I
wasn't sure it would take, and then I wasn't overly impressed with the cross!
I forgot to write it down right away and then couldn't remember which I'd
used. Shame on me! Most seedlings are strong, but, as with any, there are
variations.
Both of the possible pollen parents are still alive here, but neither are
champion growers. Most of the seedlings are growing better than either Ritual
or Regimen. But here is the best part . . . I've at least six from this
cross that put up stalks last fall. Once I line these out, I'm sure many will
rebloom in time to make it in my zone 6 garden. The rebloomers are is shades
of purple, one off white with near red beard _REB:1816-4WhRe (Linda???)_
(http://www.hort.net/lists/iris-photos/oct05/msg00111.html) , and some yellow &
white combinations.
Maybe I will get similar results from other 'wide' crosses.
I made crosses with Broad Shoulders last year but they did not take. Now I
have three rhizomes about the size of my little finger. Not much chance of
pollen this spring. But I keep trying.
If I don't have it going into this spring, I probably don't need it,
genetically speaking! Have 2004 & 2005 purchases to try this spring . . . if they
bloom! Cut a bloom stalk from the central fan on JG's new Bowled Over. Hope
it recovers well enough to give spring bloom!
I did miss several good crosses the spring of 2005 because I was gone. Have
a lot of catching up to do this spring! <vbg>
