Ruffles aid in adding distinction, which is something we are all looking for
in new irises. Rick Tasco's FIRST WAVE is so ruffled (and doesn't tear upon
opening) that you could pick it out of a group without it being labeled. If
it had a tailored form, it would look like any number of irises out there.
There have been so many tailored-formed irises bred to date, that I would
think there would be one in almost every color / pattern combination already,
with few exceptions. It would be quite the challenge really to come up with
something new and tailored that isn't already out there.
Which is why we probably have a push for more ruffles.
To me, the ruffles add a loftiness and delicacy to the flower, as well as
depth and intrigue. As an amateur photographer of irises, I find it a
challenge to capture just the right picture because of all the ruffles, but at
the same time it presents a lively looking photo full of swirls and motion
when you get it right.

Robin, I don't understand why everyone is so gung-ho for ruffled ruffles!
Maybe I'm the odd-ball, but I like plain irises i.e. minus those
everlasting
ruffles! And the smaller ones are needed for reblooming medians Do give
us
beautiful ruffled irises, but don't discard the plain-janes if the form
otherwise is good. Rosalie nr Baltimore, Md., USA a rainy, misty zone 7,
but
still near 50 degrees today!.
