Christian,
I can't speak for Bob, but from the things he's said, I'd say Bob gets a lot
of 'foot' traffic. Local people that come into the garden and buy there. I
had a good local business when I did that, but insurance can become a
problem. And local people usually don't buy new introductions. Not in my area.
They are loyal and often become good iris friends. (Very time consuming and
profits were under $500, cause they go for the cheaper stuff. Lots of digging.)
Really cuts into your breeding time too.
Bob??
<<and there seem to be a few 'hot' new intros every year. (was it Matrix
that was the striped thing last year?)>>
Are you talking about Joe Ghio's EXPOSE? The white & yellow with the purple
stripes? It is really showy when it's in bloom. A bit on the delicate side
here.
Matrix is an older (now) rebloomer that we've been talking about lately, for
a variety of reasons. New to me. When I grew irises at Alvaton I couldn't
afford most new introductions (still raising children) and when I moved to
Bowling Green I didn't have room for everything I wanted. I gave up making
crosses for three or four years. The description (below) didn't appeal to me
either. But in many ways it's supposed to be the 'ultimate' rebloomer. Thus the
name "Matrix!" I wish I could have seen the siblings to both it and RENOWN.
MATRIX(Earl Hall by Lloyd Zurbrigg, R. 1990). Sdlg. 86-144-5SC. TB 36" (91
cm) M & RE (Sept./VA).
"S. cream veined pale cinnamon, giving self effect; F. near-white, creamy
yellow rim, cinnamon hafts, suggestion of pale violet texture veining and
violet centerline; beards white, tipped cream. Violet Miracle X Brother Carl.,
Avonbank 1991. "
It's a fun hobby, but I suspect I've been putting a bit too much energy into
it!
