Re: HYB: Ruffles VS tailored

Rosalie, I don't think we have to worry about tailored irises going out
of style. DUSKY CHALLENGER is relatively tailored, but still tops the
charts. As does VANITY.

And while I agree with Patrick that there probably are irises with
tailored form in nearly every color/pattern combination, hardly any of
them will grow in the 'vale'.

Seems to me there is still plenty of room in the market place for all
kinds of forms of irises if they perform well in climates where there
aren't many super performers.

Question is whether or not there are hybridizers passionate enough about
tailored irises to be intentionally hybridizing/selecting for them.

As for selling new introductions, the small time hybridizers I've talked
with say they aren't able to even sell enough to pay for the ads &
registration. Which implies that it doesn't really matter whether or
not it's tailored, as long as it can be advertised some place where
there are no advertising costs <g>

I can't help but wonder if part of the price of new introductions these
days is intended to keep new stuff at a high enough price for the next
few years post-introduction to earn their keep.

As for ruffles, they seem to have trouble opening normally here plus are
often deformed (drought stress, I think).
