Tom Burseen Iris

Hi iris lovers: I go to Tom's growing grounds several times every year and
am quite familiar with his work. He went crazy over the flounced horned plants
and that is what his main emphasis is now. Also he goes for large beards and
big blooms. He makes wild crosses and comes up with some strange stuff
sometimes but he keeps extremely detailed records and is by no means an unthinking
or reckless hybridizer. In the beginning his goals were similar to mine,
tough iris that will thrive, as opposed to grow, in Texas. His conditions aren't
quite as trying as mine as we are usually wetter and acid soil. Another of
his creations that I just love in WHERE THERE'S SMOKE. It is certainly well
named because from a distance it looks like a cloud of smoke. It is a silvery
blue with a giant orange beard, which is probably what endeared it to him. It
does tend to flop in the tradition of VICTORIAN FALLS but is wonderfully hardy
and healthy here.
