Re: HYB: Research: Building a better rebloomer

 Loic, Betty , et al;
I hope none of you loose your dreams. There are many
factors which make a better Iris and no one can doubt
that todays modern hybrids offer something different
than the Irises at their roots.

Old dog eared Irises were considered beautiful in
their time and still are something different. I am
probably unusual, in that I enjoy the diversity. As a
judge, I consider Irises with flaring falls are not
automatic winners. I use a different yardstick. Iris
should be attractive both close up and far away. If an
Iris has falls that flare outward at a perfect
horizontal I rate them lower. The reason is if viewed
from a distance one sees them on edge and half the
color is lost. Now if one is standing over a clump and
looking down, the same Iris will provide the maximum
effect. For my perfect Iris I look for something in
between. Flared out outward but with a lilt in the
position of the falls such that the flower has a
jaunty appearance but visible from the side. The
automatic dictum that flaring is good, seems to me a
tragic oversimplification that I see in many award
winners and lowers my respect for the judging.
