Re: HYB: Eliminating plicata influence

I think this is muddying two different genetic influences. From what folks have said here before, I think the zonal/white around the beard is related to plicata (blue pigment), but <shoulder> marks are <not>. Both are on the haft of the petal.

I'm still unsure whether the dark veins (blue pigment) on light ground that cover the <entire> haft (rim to rim) are related to plicata or not. From what Chuck says, it sounds like sometimes they are, sometimes they aren't. He's posted photos before (I think) that show "clean hafted" plicatas (SDBs?)?

I guess a clue would be whether or not the pattern/color of the plicata markings change in the shoulder/haft area.

Not sure anybody knows much about genetics of the white zonal spot in yellow/pink/oranges.

Not necessarily, Betty. If I understand the theory, you might get lucky and get one in the first generation. Problem would be recognizing it, which would require test crosses.

For anyone that doesn't like the haft marks? And the white spots at the tip of the beard? This would represent years of inbreeding to eliminate the marks. Then if you add back ONE wrong plant you have to start all over again? No?
