When I used shallow loaf pans for seed planting, my holdover pans of ungerminated seeds sat through the ensuing year completely exposed to the weather, with usually about a dozen sprouts (out of, say, 40-50 pans) resulting in the following spring. Does anyone get a large number of sprouts from holdover pots under any conditions? -- Griff

Well, duh... some things are <so> obvious once they are pointed out, but I had never even thought of keeping 2nd yr pots dry to avoid early fall germination! Thanks John.Paul, since vernalization is enzyme moderated, I guess it makes sense that it would happen more slowly at lower temperatures, so maybe it takes more time when temperatures are below freezing? I'll root around on the web and see what I can find. And thanks to the rest of you for thoughts on this. I will plan to bring all the 2nd yr pots inside if we get a severe cold spell again this winter. Unless it snows...I should have kept the pots dry until winter.
