In some of these cases of young irises not being able to stand a freeze, the
operative factor may not, in fact, be cold impacting plant tissues directly,
but the impossibility of taking up necessary moisture from frozen
soil/medium, a problem experienced by many plants in frozen ground. You might try
Wilt-Pruf.
