I think my husband told me once that our garden hose could be buried to keep it from freezing through the winter- it runs to the horse trough. Seems like he said it only had to be one inch deep to keep from freezing. Don't know if I believe him- or even remember right- but if that's true then a new sprout might not freeze. Or maybe wouldn't freeze if the ground isn't frozen that deep.

I don't know how temperatures freezing affect vernalization
rate. If one month of the three is below freezing, does that matter?
Or do they need a total of three months below 40oF and above freezing?
