You would need to bury the hose beneath the frost line, what ever it may
be in your part of the country, or keep enough water running through it
so that the water did not freeze, no matter what depth or lack of depth,
you may have buried it.

I would be reluctant to rely on that until I did some more

can tell you that around here it would need to be buried considerably
deeper
than that, like a foot to eighteen inches deeper.
