Thanks a lot you all for your mails, I didn't think enough before i sent this
message... i just forgot the North American Dykes Medal was one among others
(there is also the British one and  the Australasian one),  because it has
reached such an international status of excellence that is almost seen as a
World Championship, which is not.

It is this confusion that makes things complicated, because many foreigners
resent the fact the American Dykes Medal is not open to the foreigners....and
this is totally unfair : the Americans have proven their ability to work
together by creating this award, beating the odds of the immensity of their
territory! They have managed to establish thorough regulations therefore
reached high standards. This is an amazing achievement.
(Of course it is quite tempting to imagine this competition could open to the
world and become the Dykes Medal for the Planet. But it is simply technically
impossible.)

I recon the Europeans never managed (yet!) to get together and work as one,
towards achieving the success of a European Dykes Medal. It seems to me the
time has come for it to become a reachable goal :  European customs
bureaucracy allowing irises to travel within it's borders and more Europeans
being fluent in English, the British Dykes Medal could reward all irises from
the old continent.

Thanks again for your comments; this forum is again proving it's use, for
sharing doubts and knowledge, leading to refinement of  thoughts and
improvement of practice.

  Dykes Medal honors William Rickatson Dykes (1877-1925), the English
botanist
  and author of the great monograph The Genus Iris.

  It also says that this award is restricted to irises first introduced in
the
  United States or Canada.

  Isn't there a slight paradox in banning English registered irises from an
  award supposed to honor an English botanist?
