Sorry, Chuck. I missed this question earlier. To be honest I didn't expect any rebloomers from these crosses. I've had ONE stalk of rebloom on 'Renown' in the eight years I've grown it. Bought from two different sources and grew many rhizomes.

<<What did you cross Renown to that resulted in no rebloomers?>>

I used it as pollen parent, since I didn't really like the branching.
Put pollen on the following:

1708-03 (Sweet Musette x Memphis Miss) X Renown
1907-03 (All Revved Up x Blatant) x Renown (all retro) (trashed)
2155-01:Treasured X Renown=only one survivor. Excellent branching and bloom. Giving great children. 2302:1906-03 (variegata sibling to Mahogany Muse X 2155-01 (above) hasn't bloomed yet. 2307:2155-01 x 2019-03 from Lunar Whitewash x Romantic Evening=absolutely gorgeous and thrilling children. Will plant more. 2309: Born to Exceed X Renown. Only one has bloomed. Lovely pale blue.
2310: Decadence x Renown. Two survivors should bloom this spring.
2312: Drinks @ Sunset x Renown . . . Great colors. Some good branching. Beautiful blooms.
2508: Seedling X Renown. Just planted.
The rest of the 2010 crosses have had bad germination and the story has not been told. Arabian Story, Sunmaster, & Temple of Time. 2011=only one cross and I do expect rebloom from it: (Lunar Whitewash x Romantic Evening) X Renown.

What did you cross Renown to that resulted in no rebloomers?

Don't know exactly what happened. I hit reply to Linda's earlier post
and thought it had gone to iris talk/list, but investigation shows it
went straight to Linda. AOL has been driving me nuts lately. This is
just the last example. Original message below.
____

My 2 cents:

I think huge, wide, tall fans are nice anyway. It seems logical that
they would offer better support to an iris. To refer back to my spring
posts--why don't 'Renown' children rebloom like crazy here? With only
a couple of exceptions, they all have the largest and best formed fans
in the garden. Unfortunately, they tend to be prone to leaf spot in
the summer. At this point, NONE have rebloomed, but even the
grandchildren have the neat looking fans. I expect the rebloom to
return in future generations.

<<<<So we need <huge>, wide, tall individual leaf blades?>>

Basically, I grow irises for my own enjoyment. I like to share with
others, but that is not always possible. In my garden, rebloomers are
garden irises and maybe they shouldn't be expected to meet show bench
standards. When we breed for the show bench, we strive for multiple
open blooms. Slow sequential blooms are a bigger value in my garden
than total number of buds! Staggered stalks, over several days or a
couple of weeks, increase my enjoyment. As stated many times, in many
different ways--performance varies depending on many things.

In my breeding program, I've tried to keep an eye open for the show
bench, but maybe this is a mistake?

Subject: [iris] HYB: REB: lots of big ruffled blooms (from FB
discussion)

Interesting discussion over on FB about form that I thought I'd share
here (so folks can look it up in the archives if/when it comes up).

Chuck Chapman posted this over in iris lovers, repeated here
(edited/shortened): <There is a limited amount of "Floral Mass" (Law
of)
that a rhizome can produce - more flowers you have on a stalk, the
smaller and more tailored they will be. larger, more ruffles etc the
smaller. >

So, dag nab it, that also contributes to it being hard to have lots of
large ruffled flowers on rebloomers.

Fewer leaves/fan may mean more rapid production of stalks/ frequent
blooms, but less photosynthetic surface to support lots of big, ruffled
blooms. :-(

Linda Mann east TN USA zone 7
where "kate": ((Imm x Csong) x TWILIGHT FANCIES) X MATRIX is finishing
up its 3rd stalk of the season with 12 buds. Not much ruffling or
width, but blooms are normal/ large TB size. 5 stalks in 12 months
(late fall, spring, summer, fall, late fall)
