About Broken Color irises, Bill Shear wrote:
It's novelty for novelty's sake.
Over a year ago, there was a long thread on the possibility of breeding
"double" irises, and our friend Anner posted an eloquent email which I
*believe* was titled "A Plea for Circumspection" (I'm sure there was more,
but I don't have time to comb the archives to get the exact wording). What
I remember about that email from over a year ago was the assertion that we
shouldn't throw away irises that have unusual, novel characteristics just
because they don't conform to the "norm."
The Broken-color field is relatively new, and therefore introductions are
going to be "rough around the edges." The Space-Age introductions of the
1950s (some would say through the 1980s) were no where near as well-formed
as their non-SA counterparts of the time. It takes time. But "novelty for
novelty's sake" is, I'm sure, a phrase applied to Space Age irises when they
first appeared in the iris world.
"Yes, I'm also the guy who doesn't like Thornbird! Let the flames begin."
Once again, I come back to something Anner posted to the list about how
no-one had ever been flamed on-list. So I don't know why you'd think anyone
would flame you for comments about Broken-color irises that aren't nearly as
inflammatory as your long-ago remarks about Thornbird...which I remember
very well.
And I must say, I find it *beyond* interesting that someone, who, in a
recent AIS Bulletin Article, admitted that the first judges' training they'd
ever attended was at the '99 OKC Convention, could make a qualified
judgement in 1998 as to whether or not Thornbird was worthy of the Dykes
Medal.
Opinions are one thing. Opinions presented in an arrogant manner, about
subjects on which one has no authority...those are another thing entirely.
But that's just *my* opinion.
