Do I dare mention that line breeding may be a cause of lack of
vigor? Grass-like foliage and spindly stalks are other features of
too much in-breeding. I stopped line breeding early on when I
discovered these characteristics. Funny thing, though, when I have
seen Keppel's plants growing in CA or OR, they did not display poor
growth. It seems these features show up away from home, which adds
to the mystery. CHANGE OF HEART was outstanding in the Detroit
Convention gardens, but for me, it is an IB, when it decides to
bloom.

Keppel's later things, particularly WISHFUL THINKING and CROSS
CURRENT, are quite vigorous and are outcrosses. The yellow plic line
may still be suffering. SNEEZY failed here the first winter. FOG
BOUND and CROWNED HEADS have increased well here.
