Walter,
Thank you for mentioning BD. I got it when it came out. It bloomed the
first year, and I found the patterning very subtle, but interesting.
Anyhow, the reason I wanted to thank you was that when I went out to
check on how mine is doing, I noticed a stalk just starting to poke its
head through the fan. There are three more maybe-bloom-this-year fans
and four tiny ones showing. Not great vigor, but not bad, since 2001
bloom fans need not have broken the surface yet.
Winters might be chillier here than where you are, Walter, but last year
we did not have a single hard freeze, and only 2 or 3 noticeable frosts.
Lack of vigor has been mentioned in the same breath with Keppel irises
before. He may be getting things turned around. Here are some fan
counts, with rough size estrimates, from other 1998 purchases: Crowned
Heads, 9 M; Fogbound, 4 L, 10 S; Fancy Dress, 7 M, 2 S; Lovely Dawn, 5
M-L (not counting the one with the stalk that is almost done blooming);
and the champion Morning Mood, with 6 L and 12 S fans, almost certain to
need digging after its second year.
Gerry, looking forward to some rain tonight
