Despite all the pros & cons of the "thorn", it grows wonderfully here. In
polling our customers the split seemed to be about 60/40 for vs. agin' the
coloration/horns. It didn't rank on our top 10 sellers, but we did sell over
100.

The intensity always surprises me. Being contrary by nature, that
actually gives THORNBIRD an advantage. For me it is a strong
grower and prolific in providing blooms. As for the way it looks, it's
not my favorite, but I like it well enough. That was also the reaction
of garden visitors, their primary comment being simply that they'd
never seen an iris like it. It irritated me when the space age appendages
were mixed on the same bloom, but that was true of all the space agers
which bloomed. The first bloom tended to have appendages all the same,
but the following blooms tended to mix horns with spoons or horns with
normal beards. For controversy THORNBIRD couldn't touch NOTORIOUS
which several visitors freely volunteered that they hated the look of.
Still,
as a plant with growing strength, THORNBIRD appears to be among the
top dozen. Out of 400 or so irises, about 75% of which are TBs, that is
strong plus in my climate.
