I also urge all irisarians to be vigilant of botrytis in the early spring.
Cool weather/soil conditions which occurr in early springtime are prime
conditions which allow establishment of this problem.

It does not really sound like Bill's problem was/is botrytis but watch for
other winter damage induced rot as well. Spotting it early will usually
allow you to save the plant. Perhaps you will lose the present season bloom
as in Bill's case but with a little care they will usually survive to bloom
again another year.
