Now that the big snow has melted away, I ran a quick check on the newly
planted irises. With some dismay, I found that rot had taken the terminals
of MAGICAL ENCOUNTER, HIGH STAKES, BLUE EYED BLONDE and LAST CHANCE. Only
the main fan was attacked, so the plants have been saved. But this was the
first heavy rot attack I have had in a number of years--also the first year
(last fall) that I used the "potting method" on all my new purchases. Not
a controlled experiment of course, but somewhat worrisome. Late planting
was also involved. The terminals looked weak on some of the plants when
they arrived, too.
We did have very low temperatures, (0 degrees) but this happened with ten
inches of snow on the ground. There were a lot of signs in the soil of
freeze-thaw, but no signs of heaving in any newly planted irises. I
attribute that with some reason to the potting method.
On the bright side, 2 species of crocus, 2 of anemones, 4 different
hellebores and the narcissus 'February Gold' are all in bloom, and
reticulatas are well up.
I hereby officially declare it SPRING. All heed and act accordingly.
