After 10 years of trying to get Pacific Coast Hybrids to survive after
planting, the best advice I received was to obtain them and plant them in
November... when it is wet and the plants can establish good root systems at
the beginning and during the cool, wet season. It was difficult to get
gardens to ship me plants this late, but our friend Dr. John Weiler of the
Fresno area did send me some plants in November, and they all survived.
The problem I have with survival is the long season of heat in the summer...
100 degree average. Planting PCI/PCNs in the fall, when we still have
heat, was a sure way to have them not survive. So I prepare my beds in
the Fall, and leave them empty until November, and then find myself
sometimes planting in the rain and cold... but they live. I don't have
extremely cold winters... but do have freezes... it gets down to 25 degrees,
and the cold hasn't been the problem... just the heat of summer. My soil
drains well, and I do water during the summer, obviously. Maybe this can
help someone....
