Yes, Maj, I've had a similiar experience. Our largest pine, 25 years old,
square in the middle of our front lawn, died. We found out that the
Monterey pine species has a habit of dieing at about this age. We had to
carefully remove it over the top of our newly planted iris, and figure out
what to do with established shade plants. The biggest challenge was what
to do with the large stump and 'gaping' hole in our landscaping. My son
Marc and I visited Oklahoma and the National convention last year, and my
son convinced me to build a pond over the top of the removed stump, since
nothing would grow there. So, like you, we purchased a 100 gallon pond,
built a retaining wall around it and had a blast planting all sorts of new
things around the pond. We dug a trench to the pond and have added
electric wiring so that we have a pump, and we also have a underwater heater
to keep the ice from freezing over in the winter. The water lily bloomed
for 2 months, and the other water plants grow like weeds. My son keeps
slipping in more fish, including koi, which will probably outgrow this pond,
and then what do I do? I put some rocks in the edge so that birds could
drink, but they seem to be quite happy perching on the edge and nearly
falling in. The blue jays have a regular route between the bird feeder and
the pond. The fountain makes these beautiful trickling noises, and we
seem to find everyone sitting around the pond doing not much of anything
except relaxing and watching the fish. I ordered Japanese Iris with the
idea that they would be planted around and in the pond... well, that's still
remains to be seen. Roy Davidson is multiplying quite well, and it's in
the raised bed, not the pond, but should be quite beautiful by the 2nd year.
All in all, I haven't had as much fun constructing anything as I've had with
this pond, and I can't wait until spring is a bit warmer to get out and
reorganize and plant new things.
I was so glad to hear of your enjoyment of the pond too.
