They take very well to starting in vermiculite as well, and it is a simple
matter of lifting them out of the stuff and repotting when they are about an
inch or so tall and have exhausted the food in their seeds. Can't leave them
in there forever since there isn't anything in the medium for them to eat,
but, boy, do you get some fine root systems, and they are totally undamaged
when you lift them out. For working with little seedlings with little root
systems I find fine bamboo barbecue skewers very valuable. They are also
useful for stabbing slugs.
