Talkers, All,
Hybridizing! Ahem! (My favorite subject) Someone mentioned the desire/need
for a reblooming black, while others just want information about hybridizing
in general. Soooo!
What would be your approach to a reblooming red or black? Both classes are
reputed to be difficult breeds. Little seems to have been accomplished in red
or black rebloomers. This could be because they are difficult OR because
people shun them due to reputation. Experienced hybridizers, please chime in.
I've done a little in this area with less than successful results. With the
reds, I collected a great number of reblooming reds, mostly California
rebloomers and random rebloomers. Many crosses were made with less than
great results, although some showed promise had I been able to maintain the
program. I introduced JOURNEY. Although it didn't rebloom, it carried the
genes of INFERNO, which had tried to rebloom for me, and HER ROYAL HIGHNESS.
INFERNO was one of my all time favorite reds. A cross from POST TIME X
WINESAP gave me 3 interesting rebloomers, but I forgot to move them.
With the blacks, I tried to inject FEEDBACK into the lines but with mixed
results. Mixed from bad to worse! Color wise, I got murky plums and washed
out lavender. Plant habits are bad. I had poor germination and bad plant
habits from my efforts with blacks. Most weren't good enough to work with.
If you've resisted delete this long, congratulations! What would your
approach be to improve the gene pool in these classes?
