Well here I am, on my knees Kath!
I have had the odd mild admonition. I must say, I have always had a feeling 
that much is in the translation by the reader. What is written might be seen 
by one person as helpful advice, by another as a personal attack. I 
certainly can't say how I would react to what you have received, but if it 
is as bad as you say, my method of dealing with it would be to send it not 
to John, but right back to the whole list. Hang out the dirty linen!
Some people have accidentally done this in the past, by forgetting to change 
the address. Most embarrassing!
I have also sent mailings myself in the heat of the moment and regretted 
them later. These have gone to the list, and can be found in the archives. I 
now use the Chamomile tea method.
I feel that the most important thing here is that it doesn't need to be 
personal. Someone should be able to say "I really think you are wrong 
because ...da,da,da,da," and no one take it personally.
Flaming, to my mind, is when someone sends something like "You moronic $#@%, 
why don't you just go @%$^# , you obviously don't know $%^&* about *&^%$"
That's a flame, even if the words aren't included, and I have seen these 
types of messages on other lists, but never on this.
Some people are also very eloquent at the art of putting people down 
'politely' but often their eloquence is lost on the intended victim, as it 
should be.

So...Iris, Iris, Iris, and what better could I wish you all on Valentines 
day, than a dozen postbox red irises?
