CULT: Companion Shrubs: Evergreens

From: "Dan & Marilyn Mason" <dmason@rainyriver.lakeheadu.ca>

Someone was asking about evergreens as companion plants
for irises.

I have a few dwarf globe cedars I divided from the original plant
after hilling it up and keeping it watered the first summer. These
LITTLE GIANT globe cedars stay small and compact (20") for a
few years now, and are similar in size to many perennials.

Dwarf globe cedars would probably be more suitable to combine
with Siberian or other beardless irises rather than bearded
irises. These small evergreens grow and look dramatically better
for me when they are kept mulched during hot dry summer weather.
When not mulched they turn more of a dried up yellow/brown/green.
When mulched they remain a lush healthy light green.

Every couple years a deer jumps the fence in the late fall and
trims the cedars along with daylily foliage, but this doesn't
seem to hurt the cedars or the daylilies. Deer haven't bothered
irises, here.

Where it usually gets pretty dry in July and August. But I've
never had to use flame retardant on irises, yet.
