Re: IB:Fertility

From: Gullo <tgf@frontiernet.net>

Hi Chris,

I don't mean to denigrate Lo Ho Silver it grows fairly well for me and once
rebloomed for me, although it was in early Dec. of an exceptional fall season.
I have heard many wonderful reports about this cultivar and it's rebloom
strength. I have just found Lo Ho to be difficult to use in crosses as it
doesn't seem to be very fertile. That said, I have tried to use it a number of
times and managed to get some seed, but always in small numbers. Up until a few
years ago none of the seed had ever germinated. I finally managed to get some
seeds to germinate (2) and the plants seemed to be in good shape, but they
rotted over the winter (don't know if they tried to grow over the winter). I
have one more plant from that cross which germinated last season and was making
good growth. Have to wait and see if it makes it through this winter. I have
always found I Bless to be more persistent in it's attempt to fall bloom though
it is often too late. I have a couple of white IB seedlings which are more
dependable in their fall bloom.
I certainly don't want to discourage anyone in their hybridizing endeavors
and wish you good luck in your efforts. It is entirely possible that my Lo Ho
clone is for some reason a bit finicky, hard to say. I would like to know if
anyone has had more success hybridizing with Lo Ho Silver.

Now I don't feel so bad when I see my 5' snowbank out the front window.
