CULT: Borer Hatch Day

From: Jim Wilson <wilsonjh@one.net>

I've heard several theories about the little creatures that
share our love of irises. Some say that a certain number
of warm days is what gets them going, some say that
they do their best to get out when iris leaves reach a
certain height, some say the calendar plays a role, but
my favorite is the one that says they hatch on the first
day that the temperature reaches 72 degrees Fahrenheit.
It's not a favorite because I'm convinced it is more right
than the others, but instead because it lends some
certainty and definition to the season; it creates sort
of a holiday. Further, it's one that just sneaks up. I,
for one, was not quite ready for today; we usually
celebrate here in late March. However, I did what
I could to finish the cleaning that I thought I had longer
to work on, and the battle begins. To everyone sharing
the weather we have here, or have had it recently, or
will soon, HAPPY BHD!
