I don't believe it is required on this list that we state our name, zone or
geographical locations, age, gender, sexual preference, or anything else.
However, I do beleive that it is generally of interest on a gardening list,
for all listers to know where each other lives (approximately).
This information is not relevant to all e-mails, but certainly to most. It
is a fact on this list, that most listers do not mention their location. It
is assumed by almost all listers, that almost everyone else lives in the US
of A. I have had personal messages that indicate this very strongly.
I believe it is reasonable to assume this because:-
1. The use of the internet began and proliferated rapidly in the US of A.
2. Many other countries do not have sufficiently affluent lifestyles to
allow for use of the internet by large numbers of the population.
3. This is an 'English' speaking list.
However there are many lists which do have considerable international input.
A member of one of my other lists made a comment recently which indicated
that he thought most list members were fellow countrymen. He was somewhat
shocked and apologiese profusely, when he discovered that there were very
few American list members, the vast majority being S.E. Asian, Australian,
English, Canadian, and European.
Never assume anything about anyone - I know for a fact (without mentioning
names) that people have dropped off this list because of this bias alone.
I'm still here because I accept it as one of the idiosyncracies of this
list. What I've learnt about cultivating irises is far more important.
