I seldom join in the fun at "iris-talk" however I have some
suggestions on this one[viruses].
I'll assume all of you have some form of anti virus software
on your systems. Having the software is just the
beginning. The properties need to be configured & there are
usually many options. Pay special attention to your e-mail
scan selections & especially to the action you instruct your
system to take. Regular updates are a must. We use
McAfee Virus Scan which has a free service called Secure
Cast that is on duty all the time & flashes you constantly
about current virus info. I found it annoying, intrusive &
stressful.
So instead I religiously update every Monday. In addition
to our own anti virus we have subscribed to USWest's e-mail
virus scan. All my traffic, in & out, is scanned by our
server including attachments[applets, photos etc.]. When
the "Nasty" is found it is removed and the recipient &
originator are notified. The value of the redundant
protection is obvious & effectively crushed the xxxxx Park
worm, leaving our system virus free. It might
be a good idea to ask your servers if they have this type
service available. We fell victim to an earlier worm also
from Iris Photo which prompted us to employ this fire wall
type approach to kill the vermin before it reaches our
computer. We still keep McAfee combat ready. A good
defense must have depth.
