I read or saw somewhere...
Someone had made a cross by placing pollen on the lip and then onto the backside of the stigmatic flap, and then they squished the pollen into it by squeezing the stigmatic flap and the style arm together to make sure the cross takes. I personally had never done this, nor do I know anyone else who does this, so I was a bit amused. I have always just applied the pollen.
Since then I had never given it much thought. But, now that it is approaching bloom time, and I am planning my crosses, and since I have been going though my old iris culture notes, I want to know if anyone else does this. Is it a good thing to do, or an old wives tale.
I would think that squeezing the stigmatic flap with the style arm would result with some of the pollen coming away from the lip and sticking to the arm...which is adverse to the whole procedure.
