To the best of my knowledge, Surflan is now used by all
lily breeders when attempting conversion to polyploidy.

I am not familiar with the breeding of Patriot but I doubt
that Surflan would have had any effect on the contrast of
the variegation.  It is a startling plant, but I expect
that would come from its parents.
