I have gone to Yahoo Groups and re-registered just as I did for E-Groups.
I have been reading the letters with all the negative comments about
being required to give Yahoo Groups personal information and personally I
do not see a problem with what they ask. I am normally completely
against anything that I feel infringes upon my privacy but I did not
object to the questions at Yahoo. Honestly the questions asked at Yahoo
were basically the same questions asked by E-Groups if and when you
registered with them and Yahoo, like E-Groups, does give the registering
person the option of how much of the registering information is to be
made public. The information asked by Yahoo is pretty much the same
information asked by other web sites that require registration to use
them.

Am I missing something here?

When eGroups took over One-List, I didn't do anything, and I haven't done
anything with the Yahoo Groups take-over of E groups. And,
everything turned out ok. The messages just started coming without
anything on my part. I did get a message to set up a Yahoo email
account which I did not want so I deleted it. Maybe this is what
yawl are talking about with the personal questions. I haven't been
asked to do anything to convert.

To all who are asking about Yahoogroups:

If you just want to continue to send and receive list mail, you don't
have to do anything. However if you want to be able to change from
"Individual Email" to "Digest" or to "Unsubscribe" for instance (or any
of the other administrative functions using the Web) you will have to
create a Yahoo ID. It is easy to do. Just go to the Conversion Wizard at:

http://beta.groups.yahoo.com/convwiz

If you have forgotten your eGroups password, there is a solution there
for that as well. All you have to do is follow the simple instructions.
If you already have a Yahoo! ID, you can link the two easily.

As I said before, if you don't like the question, give them a bogus answer.

Yes, you are. When you go to a newsstand to buy a magazine, you are not
required to disclose any information whatsoever about yourself. Your
reading habits are not subject to a violation of your privacy. Some of
us are irritated by the intrusion. If the questionaire were strictly
voluntary, there would be no significant intrusion upon the reader's
right to privacy. This questionaire appears to be an involuntary
requirement for re-registration, if I understand correctly. Also, there
is the other matter of passwords to consider.

There is a significant amount of time and trouble involved for each
reader to maintain and troubleshoot problems with restricted access by
passwords. Such efforts may not be significant for users with only a few
such passwords, but there are those of us who must deal with passwords
and Personal Identification Numbers (PINs) numbering in the dozens to
hundreds. The last thing we need is yet another service which has a
password that needs to be maintained and fixed on occasion.

Take the current situation for an example. My subscription has never
been converted to a password account. Like now, the ability to read and
post is unchanged without the password association. However, any other
activity to subscribe, unsubscribe, and so forth require the latest
registration, password, and involuntary questionaire. Attempts to view
the questionaire by way of the conversion wizard are futile. The
conversion wizard refuses to provide any access, because it says that
the e-mail address is not found. In the absence of effective
instructions, it is not known if or how the current subscription can be
unsubscribed without the special intervention of an administrator. Even
if the current and original subscription can be unsubscribed by an old
style command, there is no reason to believe that a new subscription can
be registered without submitting to the unwanted password regime and the
involuntary questionaire (which is not yet viewable).

As you can see, the simple process is not as simple as it may first
appear. The older style of simple commands and no passwords is
infinitely preferable to the current commercialized scheme.

Also, the suggestion that the hosting of the maillist is free is not
entirely accurate. The hosting may have no direct monetary cost, but
there is a considerable cost in time and labor by the list managers,
post authors, and others participating in the list activities. It is
true that the host is contributing the facilities and some labor,
however the host is also not sharing any of the advertising revenues
with the list managers or post authors. So, there is room for
alternative views about who is contributing what versus who is
benefiting how much in the overall scheme.

Commercial ownership of the host has already made multiple changes in
ownership and management. Noting Yahoos!' struggles for profitability,
it is reasonable to assume that the future of the maillist host is
llikey to continue changing ownership and responsibility. With that
prospect in mind, the benefits accruing from a long-term and stable
association with a non-commercial host, non-profit organization and/or
educational establishment, appear to be rather attractive. They may not
even require those troublesome passwords and questionaires <smile>.

A few days ago I got around to planting the Signa seeds I got last fall.
These were the 1999 crop. Most seemed okay but some of the pseudacorus
seemed
less then healthy. I planted some from the same packet last fall and they
seemed perfect. All the other varieties seemed okay. So do pseudacorus
seeds
get old quicker? In addition I ended up with more seeds then I could plant
with some varieties. How long will they keep in general?

While I'm at it the various Ensata seeds seemed to vary in size quite a
bit.
Some were fairly large other types of Ensata smaller. Does seed size vary
quite a bit?

	Thanks
	Nick

Subject: AIS: help - checklist mystery

I told John I'd quit chewing on this but I can't seem to let go of a
mystery I ran into editing some bits and pieces of the 70s checklist.
There are two cultivars for which the electronic version I am editing
doesn't match what's in the hard copy (70s decade book).

In the book, STORM FLURRY is listed this way:

STORM FLURRY (Schreiner's, R. 1975). Sdlg. E 1365-A. TB, 42" (107 cm),
ML. Velvety blue-black self; purple-black beard. A 595-7: (S 500-B x
Tuxedo) X (1107-BB: x Black Swan). Schreiner's 1975.

But in the electronic draft I was editing, seedling 1107-BB was expanded
so the entry looks like this:

STORM FLURRY (Schreiner's, R. 1975). Sdlg. E 1365-A. TB, 42" (107 cm),
ML. Velvety blue-black self; purple-black beard. A 595-7: (S 500-B x
Tuxedo) X (1107-BB: (R 901-A: (Dark Boatman x N364-1: (L 492-A x L
474-J)) x Black Swan). Schreiner's 1975.

In the other one, SUDELEY is listed this way in the book:

SUDELEY (J. D. Taylor, R. 1979). Sdlg. V.83/1. SDB, 13" (33 cm), E.
Blue, plum purple spot, brown-purple at hafts; grey-blue beard. Double
Lament X Royal Fairy.

But in the electronic draft, it's listed this way:

SUDELEY (J. D. Taylor, R. 1979). Sdlg. V.83/1. SDB, 13" (33 cm), E.
Yellow self; deep blue beard. Double Lament X Royal Fairy.

Anybody have any clues as to where these two changes came from or, if
not, know if the seedling # expansion is correct and what color SUDELEY
actually is? Big difference between yellow and blue!

Thanks.

Anybody out there have the original yearly checklists for the 70s?
LITTLE LAMB (B. Warburton, R. 1979) is described as 'Tailored white

excited about how white it was...Anybody have the 79 R&I and willing to
look it up?

The original wording was "Tailored pure white self; white styles and beard".
At the time, "white white" was widely used, along with "blue white" and
'yellow white" to distinguish between the various hues.

Well I finally bothered to make the change. I haven't had a good look yet,
but it certainly doesn't look as neat and well laid out as e-groups or
one-list was.

  >As I said before, if you don't like the question, give them a bogus

You can't actually leave a field empty, which I think is rather a pain.
They have the choice of gender as male, female or -. If you click on - the
send back a message asking to specify gender. I really think they have no
business asking. I am rather surprised they don't ask for sexual preference.
I wouldn't have bothered, but I like to be able to access my account and
the archives for other lists which don't have alternative archives.
So now they have an account for an 80 year old Male living in Antarctica!

I did last year. The seeds were thoroughly dried and then I put them in
labeled medicine containers and left them in the deep freezer until I took
them out, soaked them for about a week and planted them last fall.
Germination was pretty good. I've followed the same steps this year, but
it's not time for them to germinate yet, so haven't a clue as to the
percentage I may get on this year's crop. I'm more fearful of my potting
mixture this year than the freezing, though.

fish come in holding about 1 cu. foot of soil from a local pet store. I have
a huge supply of potting soil I prepared last summer. I am planting the
seeds
in these boxes and covering deeply enough, about 1", to take possible
heaving
and squirrels into account, and watering generously. Tho hardly an
authority,
I understand that some seeds have germination inhibitors and that repeated
flushing with water should wash it away/out. This week so far we are not
even
going below 32 F, but later we will, and will likely have at least 8 more
freeze thaw cycles. I think that ought to work.
Re: PIG FOOD bone meal. I spoke with a local far supply today when I
bought some super phosphate and they could not identify a product or brand
that had a high bone meal content. Would the person who made this
suggestions
please elaborate?
They did warn me that oil prices will result in fertilizer prices when the
spring shipments come in, which was one reason I stopped by anticipating
this.

Ray: I get the distinct impression that something was changed between
the printing of the '79 R & I (published in 1980) and the IRIS CHECK
LIST 1979 (published in 1981).

1. The 1979 CHECKLIST does indeed say "Tailored white white self,
etc.......

2 The 1979 R&I says "Tailored pure white self; white styles and beard,
etc.....

I will try to query Keith Keppel and see if perhaps he can shed some
light on this mystery and the one involving Storm Flurry and Sudeley.
