Just imagine the challenge of distinguishing between the types of patterns 
that result from individually striped beard hairs.  

If they are uniform, when viewed from the top the beard looks solid -- but 
from the side  it appears layered [like a cake].  

If different hairs have different stripe patterns, from a normal viewing 
distance the beard looks like a blend of the two colors -- but up close it 
appears mottled.
