Re: AIS: checklist mysteries and nostalgia

Well, Mike Lowe is so concerned about these checklist mysteries that he
has flown all the way to the west coast to talk with Keith Keppel in
person to sort it out <g>.

(he is there, but I think he actually went to do a Judge's training
<g>....)

One of the things I have really enjoyed about helping edit the
electronic checklists is the opportunity to 'look into the minds' of
past (and current) hybridizers, seeing what kinds of people they
are/were to have chosen names and seedling numbering systems that they
did, as well as the words they chose (I know, sometimes/often? just
copied from some color-chart...) to describe colors. (And yes, I am one
of those wierdos who enjoys reading dictionary entries - I inevitably
get side-tracked when I look something up). And in asking about what
first appeared to be a simple typographic redundancy (thanks Walter,
Sharon, & others for explaining 'white white')....

Walter, your comment about beard color in the color class shows being
the 'invisible' color of the beard in the throat reminded me of
(another) one of my misconceptions.... When I saw a description that
said something like 'beard yellow, tipped purple', I assumed that meant
that the whole beard was yellow, except that the tips of each 'hair' in
the beard was purple. Very exotic sounding! Much to my surprise, I
learned that often meant that the part of the beard in the throat where
you can't even see it is yellow, with the part that shows being purple!
